Half Day Soweto Tour (IT)

from R1,097.25

Soweto is the biggest black urban settlement in Africa and has a population of over 2 million residents, and has a rich political history. During the struggle to overthrow the Apartheid State, Soweto was the centre of political campaigns including the 1976 student uprising which started in Soweto and spread to the rest of the country. The routes on this tour therefore reflect many of the insights to the political significance of the settlement.

All about the Half Day Soweto Tour (IT).

You will collected from your hotel and travel through the heart of Johannesburg to Soweto which is a sprawling cluster of townships on the South-Western flank of Johannesburg. Soweto was created in the 1930’s by the Government wanting to separate Blacks from Whites, creating “townships”. Soweto became the largest Black city in South Africa, but until 1976 its population could have status only as temporary residents, serving as a workforce for Johannesburg.

From the footbridge of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital which is the largest hospital on the African Continent, you get an amazing panoramic view of the sprawling Soweto Townships.

Nelson Mandela’s original small and humble house which has been turned into “the Mandela House Museum” and provides an interesting stopover and wealth of history relating to the worlds most famous former prisoner. The house consists of four separate but inter-leading rooms that contain an assortment of memorabilia, paintings and photographs of the Mandela family as well as a collection of doctorates bestowed on Nelson Mandela by various Institutions and universities around the world.

As you travel through the more affluent parts of Orlando West, to visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial, you can see the houses occupied by Winnie Madzikizela-Mandela, Desmond Tutu and the Sisulu’s. The Hector Pieterson Memorial in Orlando West was built in memory of the people that died during the uprising on the 16th June 1976.

After the visit to the memorial, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
